ShoreTel/Mitel: RingCentral now supports the ShoreTel/Mitel IP400 Phones

RingCentral has now certified the ShoreTel/Mitel IP480, IP480G, and IP485G (NOT THE IP420) phones to work on their platform. This is great for companies that want to move away from Mitel but do not want to have to invest in all new phones. Some of the other Mitel 6800 & 6900 series phones are also certified but I have not gone through and tested that process out and all the features. So far, I have only worked on the IP400 series but I do plan on looking at the 6800 and 6900 series. I have been using a IP480 with RingCentral for about a week now and have not run into any issues. So, below are the steps I took to configure one of these phones to work with RingCentral.

Once the phone is upgraded, it will be pointed to the RingCentral Servers. At this point the phone will no longer work on the Mitel platform and will only work with RingCentral. This can not be undone.

The firmware is a two step process, first to intermediate 804 firmware and then to ST firmware that is compatible with the RingCentral service.

The migrating phones need to register with Mitel Cloud Migration service to upgrade the phone firmware, for bot intermediate 804 firmware and SIP ST firmware that is compatible with RingCentral.

There are two paths to register the phones:

1. Configure DHCP option 153

    A. Set the parameter configServers=ip400.mitelcloud.com

    B. Factory reset the phone by pressing Mute then CLEAR# (25327#) while on the idle (Home) screen

    C. Press the Clear soft key to proceed. This will clear all the previous settings and the phone will reboot.

    D. Upon reboot, the phone will register automatically with the Migration Service with the default extension 1000

Or

 2. Manual Phone Configuration

    A. Factory reset the phone by pressing Mute then CLEAR# (25327#) while on the idle (Home) screen

    B. After the phone reboots, press Mute then SETUP# (25327#) and go to Admin Options

    C. If it asks for a voicemail or admin password enter 1234

    D. Select Services -> Config Server and enter http://ip400/mitelcloud.com in the Config server 1 field. Alternatively you can enter 34.111.177.55 or 34.110.141.137 instead of the URL

    E. Press the Back soft key, press the Back soft key one more time, then press the Apply soft key to apply the changes.

    F. The phone will register automatically with the Migration Service with the default extension 1000

First upgrade step (Intermediate 804 Firmware)

1. After the pre-upgrade setup is completed, the phone will automatically start the firmware upgrade

2. The phone will start downloading the latest 804 firmware and the screen will display the download status

3. Once the firmware download status is 100% the phone will reboot with the new firmware

4. The phone will display "Dial 400to switch to RC" on the top of the screen. There were a few phones that hung on upgrading for a very long time. I did end up rebooting these phones to get to this point

Second upgrade step (Final ST Firmware)

1. Dial 400  WARNING: Once the ST firmware is installed there is no process to revert back to the Mitel compatible firmware.

2. The phone will display Unknow call failure, or call failed and give a busy signal. Press the OK softkey. If you see any additional messages do not take any action or power off the phone.

3. The ST firmware download process runs in the background and the phone may not show any status on the screen.

4. Once the ST firmware download completes the phone will automatically reboot and boot with the ST firmware and the phone should not be connected to RC.

Assigning the phone

1. Log into the RingCentral portal and assign the phone to the correct user

2. On the phone press Settings

3. Press Advanced

4. Enter the admin password of 22222

5. Go to Reset and select Factory Rest

6. The phone will reboot, download the config for the user it is assigned to. When the phone comes back up it should show the user info for the user that was assigned to it.
